LOL, from a guys point of view... My girl friend gets small beaded stickers or of the sort, and puts clear nail polish over it. Looks nice and is inexpensive. Then again, stickers can be pricey. Better yet, get some waterslide paper %26lt;can also be used as rub on tattoos%26gt; and print your own designs, apply, and cover with polish. i use a toothpick dipped in the color then i make a tiny dot on my nail and kind of ';stretch'; the dot into lines to make my designs. i've done stars, cupcakes, cherries, hearts, checkered patterns, etc. too many to list! be creative!
Get a really fine paint brush. It lets you do intricate detail easily and it's cheap.
